We then headed to the Genocide Museum. Our guide shared with us the story behind the pictures and structures we saw. It was heartbreaking to be reminded that people are capable of causing such harm and pain to their fellow human beings. Infants were thrown up in the air and shot right then and there. Sisters, brothers, mothers, fathers, daughters, sons were tortured and killed.
The following day, we left the hostel by 7:00 AM to get to the Grand Palace early. We had a bus to catch a little after noon and, aside from the palace, we were going to see the Genocide Museum and go buy bags at the Russian Market. These are photos I took on our way to the palace.
We got to Phnom Penh in the evening. We left our bags at a backpacker’s hostel, where we would spend the night. Then, went ahead to have dinner.
On our last morning in Siem Reap, Tin and I decided to go for a quad ride. I didn’t get to do Boracay’s version of this when I visited the place a few years back, so I was pretty excited to try it out. But, more than that, I wanted to do this because I was interested to get a glimpse of life and people of Siem Reap, outside the tourist spots.
May 19, 2012, was our day for Angkor Wat. I looked at images of this beautiful creation a couple of days before our scheduled departure. And, that got me excited for this trip (plus, it’s my first out of the country trip with Tin!). But, admiring it through pictures is nothing compared to witnessing its beauty in person. It was indeed a privilege.
The following day, we woke up excited for what’s going to happen. We were scheduled to visit the Angkor National Museum in the morning and see the Apsara show in the evening. In between was open for anything.
Going out of the country was not something I was interested in, until I saw pictures of my boss in INCITEGov, Ms. Dinky Soliman, in Cambodia. She was riding a motorcycle with a local and a good view of rice paddies of the rural part of the country. She looked like she was having fun! And, from then on, I said to myself that I would one day visit Cambodia.
