Sometimes all you gotta do is ask. But, what if you don’t know what to ask for?
It has been two years since I went through this dilemma. Knowing that there’s a perfect job waiting for me out there. A job that I would love to wake up to and see myself growing with. I could feel it being in existence. But, I just didn’t know what that was. So, I didn’t know what to ask for.
It took me a while before I figured out. It took me months – years even -, numerous conversations with my mother and friends. And, a lot of confrontations with myself. (No, I’m not crazy; just a li’l weird, maybe.) For some time, I felt like I’m wasting my smarts. I’m wasting the gift that God has given me. And, that sucks, ya know?
That went on for a while until I let things flow. I sat myself down one evening, looked deep into myself and was intent on figuring out what I wanted to do with my life before getting up from that chair.
So, what was my dream job? I wanted a job that would allow me to work from home. I wanted a job with a start up company, where I can still contribute a lot. A job that would allow me to grow. It doesn’t have to pay super high; it just needs to support me and my family. And, it has to allow some sort of flexibility in schedule so I can achieve my dream of traveling the world. I wanted a job that would allow me to work with really smart people – people I could relate to and have ease in communicating with. I wanted a job that would allow me to grow professionally and would challenge me. I wanted a job that’s moving and not stagnant. I wanted a job that would provide the space for me to flourish. And, most important for me, I wanted a job run by people with heart. Oh, plus that it has to be related to travel. I don’t necessarily have to travel, it just has to be related to travel.
(That last bit was the clincher. I do love to travel but I didn’t have any experience working in the travel industry. Well, what the heck. I didn’t have anything to lose.)
I didn’t know it existed. I mean, I did set the bar high. Until I found this opportunity on JobStreet for a customer service position. The poster is an online travel agency that aims to create a series of themed vacation websites, called eBookingServices (now Tripaneer.com). I did a bit of research on it. Looked at one of its websites, BookYogaRetreats. And, immediately prepared all the necessary application documents. I used my kick-ass motivation letter I’ve prepared in the past and which I didn’t change a thing on. Ahhh, that was a sign.
I went through the interview process. The longest I’ve had. Ever. 2 hours for the first interview plus another 2 hours for the 2nd one. The third one was quite a breeze, just about 30 minutes. And, as they say, the rest is history.
I’ve been with Tripaneer since May 2014. I started as a Destination Manager and, after 7 months of being with the company, I started my training as a Recruitment Manager for the HR Team of Tripaneer. (Side note: I realized that 4 years ago, I was asked what I wanted to do for realz. I said that I wanted a job that would allow me to talk to people and at the same time contribute to them. I’m now doing it!).
And, all those I listed above? I found it here in Tripaneer and so much more. 🙂
So, now, since I have fulfilled my dream, I just continue on creating new ones, not just for myself but also for the people I interact with. I always endeavor to let people see that settling should never be an option. Just because it pays the bills, it’s not enough. There IS a job out there that’s perfect for you. A job that will get you up on your feet every morning. A job that will make you feel that your life is worth living. A job that will make you realize that, regardless of how difficult things may be, you still want to continue doing this because this is where you can best contribute at. Again, all you gotta do is ask. But, before that, allow yourself to discover and choose what that perfect job looks like for you. 🙂
