15+ Best Things to Do in Bangkok for First-Time Visitors

First time in Thailand and wondering what the best things to do in Bangkok are? Don’t worry. I’ve got you!
My very first overseas trip was actually to Bangkok. I wasn’t as seasoned a traveler then, and to be honest, I didn’t prepare much (rookie mistake). I came to attend a personality development course, more than to explore the city. So, I didn’t get to appreciate Bangkok the way it deserved.
But I’ve returned a few times since, both for quick layovers (like when I met my friends before heading to Ayutthaya) and longer stays (like when we spent a few days in Bangkok before and after visiting Myanmar), and I’ve come to love the city more with each visit.

Iβve traveled across Southeast Asia over the years, and Bangkok remains one of the cities I always return to.
Bangkok is a city of beautiful contradictions. It’s chaotic and calming, luxurious and budget-friendly, overwhelming and unforgettable – definitely a perfect destination for those just starting to explore the beauty of Southeast Asia.
And being a top tourist destination not just in the region but in the world, there are indeed tons of things to do in Bangkok at your fingertips. But which ones are actually worth doing on your first trip? I got you.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through the top things to do in Bangkok for first-time visitors. I grouped them by interest, so you can plan your trip around what matters most to you! And if you stick around ’til the end, I’ve included a sample one-day itinerary to help you get started!

π£ Top things to do in Bangkok for your first visit
Here’s my curated list of the best things to do in Bangkok for first-time visitors (a mix of personal experiences and highly recommended activities from local experts and seasoned travelers I trust) to help you plan your itinerary with ease.
π― For Culture & History Lovers
If one of your motivators for exploring a destination is to learn and experience its culture and history, then the first group of activities will fascinate you.
1) Visit the Grand Palace & Wat Phra Kaew

During my first visit to Bangkok, I didn’t have the chance to explore the city extensively, but I made it a point to visit one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, the Grand Palace.
I was blown away by the detail on the temple walls. So, I know that first-time visitors to Bangkok will appreciate the Grand Palace’s stunning Thai architecture and rich royal history.
Within its grounds, you’ll also find Wat Phra Kaew, home to the revered Emerald Buddha, one of the most sacred sites in the country.
π‘ PRO TIP: Just a short walk from the Grand Palace, you’ll find the Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho. Wat Pho is one of the oldest temples in the city and is a peaceful, cultural stop that offers a quieter, more reflective contrast to the nearby crowds.
π‘ PRO TIP: If you are fascinated by history and heritage, I recommend seeing the famous temples of Bangkok by joining a guided tour from knowledgeable local guides to help make your trip more memorable.
2) Watch the sunset at Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn)

Sitting right by the Chao Phraya River, Wat Arun is one of the most photogenic spots in Bangkok. Gorgeous at any time of the day, it is actually at its most stunning during sunset, when its spires glow beautifully in the late afternoon light.
Catching the golden light here, especially from across the water, is a memorable way to end your temple tour.
π‘ PRO TIP: Got more time? Go on a one-day private cultural excursion to Mae Klong Railway Market, Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, and the Historic City of Ayutthaya.
π For Foodies
If you travel to explore a destination’s culinary scene, then Bangkok will not disappoint. Here are some of the best food-related activities to enjoy in Bangkok.
3) Try fried insects at Khao San Road
Want something extraordinary? Head to Khao San Road to explore its vibrant street food scene, including trying fried insects!

π‘ PRO TIP: Khao San Road isn’t just about fried bugs. While it was fascinating, there are other experiences to be had on Khao San Road. For example, I loved it when we just hung out, enjoyed local Thai snacks, drank beer, and spent time with old and new friends.
4) Join a local Thai food tour in Old Bangkok
But if you’re not one to try crawlies and not sure where to start (or what to order), a food tour is a fun and easy way to explore Thai cuisine. Local-led tours often include tastings at family-run food stalls, markets, and neighborhood favorites, while giving you context about the food, culture, and stories behind it.
π‘ PRO TIP: Book a highly-rated local food tour, like this Old Siam Bangkok Food Tour, to make sure that you get your money’s worth. I recommend reading reviews from fellow travelers to get an insight on whether or not the tour you’re looking at joining is for you!
5) Enjoy street food in Chinatown (Yaowarat)
Once the sun goes down, Yaowarat Road in Chinatown turns into a lively, open-air feast. Think sizzling woks, fresh seafood, grilled meats, and endless street snacks, all packed into a few chaotic, wonderful blocks. It’s one of the best places to dive into Bangkok’s street food scene.
π‘ PRO TIP: While you can definitely do this on your own, I still encourage you to join a local foodie tour of Yaowarat – Bangkok’s Chinatown.I find that it makes the culinary experience more memorable when you enjoy the food while learning from a knowledgeable guide!
6) Experience dining at a Michelin-star restaurant
Or, if you want to go beyond the usual, why not enjoy a meal at one of Thailand’s Michelin-starred restaurants? It’s a little pricey and the wait times are long, but it’s worth trying!
7) Take a Thai cooking class
While I havenβt personally taken a cooking class in Bangkok yet, Iβve heard great things about it from fellow travelers. You’d get hands-on experience as you learn preparing authentic Thai meals, including including shopping for ingredients at a local market. It’s like bringing home a bit of Thai culture with you!
ποΈ For Shoppers
Bangkok is also a dream destination if you love to shop – whether you’re a bargain hunter (like me!), luxury shopper, or even if you’re just browsing!
8) Shop at Chatuchak Weekend Market
Exploring Chatuchak Weekend Market is an experience in itself. With over thousands of stalls selling everything – from vintage tees and handmade crafts to plants and pets – Chatuchak can feel like a maze, but that’s half the fun!
π‘ PRO TIP: The Chatuchak Weekend Market is only open on Saturdays and Sundays from 9am-6pm. Be sure to plan your trip accordingly! Plus, it can get quite crowded, so I recommend arriving early, wearing comfortable shoes, and bringing cash!
9) Explore Bangkok’s massive malls: MBK, Siam Paragon, Siam Center
It may seem silly that one of the best things to do in Bangkok is to explore malls. But I kid you not, it is!
In Bangkok, going to the mall is practically a cultural activity. Siam Paragon has luxury brands and gourmet food halls, Siam Center features local designer labels and cool concept stores, and MBK is your go-to for affordable finds, souvenirs, and tech accessories. All three are linked by skywalks and easy to explore in one go.
10) Browse riverfront shops at Asiatique or IconSiam

Not in the mood for big crowds? Check out Asiatique or IconSiam. I liked my experience visiting Asiatique, which has a night market feel with boutiques, restaurants, a Ferris wheel, and a peaceful view of the river and Bangkok skyline.
IconSiam, on the other hand, is a sleek, upscale mall with a stunning food court and luxury shops. Perfect for golden hour shopping or dinner with a view.
π‘ PRO TIP: Got extra time? Another great thing to do while you’re in Bangkok is to go on a day trip and visit Damnoen Saduak Market and Maeklong Railway Market, where you can interact with friendly local market vendors.
π¨ For Art & Design Lovers
If you love discovering the creative side of a city, Bangkok won’t disappoint. Here are some of the best things to do in Bangkok for art and design enthusiasts.
11) Enjoy modern artworks at MOCA

Probably one of my favorite experiences in Bangkok was when I had the chance to immerse myself in the beautiful artworks at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) on my most recent trip to Bangkok. It offers a deeper look into Thailand’s modern cultural landscape, far from the tourist crowds.
12) Wander through creative spaces at Warehouse 30
Warehouse 30 is a converted warehouse in the heart of the Creative District. It is a relaxed place to browse indie shops, small exhibitions, and local design brands.
π For Night Owls & Adults
Bangkok is also known for its vibrant nightlife, and if it’s your first time in the city, I invite you to experience it too! Here are some of the best things to do in Bangkok at night for adults.
13) Shop and snack your way through night markets
For affordable bites, trendy finds, and a lively crowd, visit the night markets like Chatuchak Market, Jodd Fairs, and the now permanently closed Artbox Thailand.
π‘ PRO TIP: Check social media for announcements of events and pop-ups that you may find interesting. It was how we found out about Artbox Thailand!
14) Grab drinks at a rooftop bar
Love gorgeous skyline views? Enjoy drinks at Vertigo, Octave, or even a fine dining experience at Sky Bar for a perfect way to wind down after a tiring day of exploring the city.
π‘ PRO TIP: For a more local, stylish night out, bar-hop through Thonglor or Soi Nana’s speakeasies, and enjoy Bangkok’s hidden bars and creative cocktails in these trendy neighborhoods. Or, pub crawl with a local tour guide for a memorable experience.
15) Watch a Muay Thai match
If you’re looking for something out-of-the-box, why not catch a Muay Thai match? I recommended this to a few friends who were visiting Bangkok for the first time and they enjoyed it! A li’l caveat though. It’s not for everyone, but it can be an unforgettable experience if you want to get a glimpse into Thai culture through combat.
π‘ PRO TIP: Want a more hands-on experience? Sign up for an introductory Muay Thai Boxing class for beginners!
π Romantic Things to Do in Bangkok for Couples
Visiting Bangkok with your partner? Check out these romantic activities that you can do with your loved one while you’re in Bangkok.
16) Book a couple’s massage at a luxury spa
Getting a couple’s massage at a luxury spa with your partner is perfect after a long flight or a full day out – I have a feeling that no one will argue about that. But, if you’re on a budget, we’ve also tried getting traditional Thai massages from local massage shops that offer budget-friendly options without skimping on comfort.
π Where to stay in Bangkok
As a popular tourist destination, Bangkok offers a wide range of accommodation options for its visitors. I did the research, so you won’t have to. Here are some of the top-rated Bangkok accommodations for you to consider:
π Budget Option: Khaosan Social Capsule Hostel
Guests love staying at Khaosan Social Capsule Hostel because of the friendly and welcoming atmosphere, helpful staff, and clean rooms and facilities. Plus, it’s a very short walk to Khao San Road.
π Mid-range Option: Siam @ Siam Design Hotel Bangkok
Whether you’re traveling solo, as a couple, with friends, or with your family, if you’re into art and design, you’ll probably love staying at Siam @ Siam Design Hotel Bangkok. Guests love staying here because of its great value for money, unique architecture, cleanliness, and warm service. They also appreciate that it’s located within walking distance to popular landmarks like Jim Thompson House, MBK Center, and Siam Paragon.

π Quick Travel Tips for Visiting Bangkok

Now that I’ve shared with you what, in my opinion, are the best things to do in Bangkok, it’s time to start preparing for your trip! Here are some quick tips that will hopefully make your trip to Bangkok smoother and more enjoyable.
Best time to visit Bangkok
If you’re looking to explore temples and markets, I recommend scheduling your visit to Bangkok during the cool and dry months, from November to February. Thailand is a tropical country and can get hot from March to May, and wet during the rainy season from June to October.
Getting around Bangkok
- Bangkok’s traffic can be unpredictable (can be intense around 7β9 AM and 4β7 PM), so I recommend using the BTS Skytrain and MRT subway, whenever available (they’re fast, affordable, and air-conditioned!).
- If you want to experience riding tuk-tuks for fun, short rides, I encourage you to agree on a price first before hopping on one.
- But if you’re not into trains and tuk-tuks, you can also try Grab (ride-hailing app), which I find reliable when getting around Bangkok.
- If you want more control, you can always rent a private car to get you around the city.
What to Wear in Bangkok
- Dress light and breathable. It’s hot and humid most of the year.
- When visiting temples, make sure to cover your shoulders and knees (I recommend bringing a scarf or light jacket, just in case).
- Especially if you’re visiting temples, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes or sandals that are easy to take off and put back on. You’ll be required to remove your footwear before entering the temple.
