I’ve spent numerous weekends in La Union since I was a kid, and stayed at different accommodations with my family and friends. But recently, I’ve had the privilege of staying at Sunset Hour Elyu in San Juan, La Union.
And – I’m just going to say it – I hope you get to experience staying there, too.

Sunset Hour Elyu is a fairly new vacation rental in San Juan, La Union. It’s a two-bedroom home owned by Melissa Avecilla that opened its doors to guests in April 2023.
As a daughter of La Union and someone who loves creating beautiful memories with her family and friends, Melissa and her husband built Sunset Hour Elyu with its guests in mind.

There are many great places for families and groups to stay in San Juan, La Union. So, why book your stay in Sunset Hour Elyu?

Why I love staying at Sunset Hour Elyu
I first stayed at Sunset Hour Elyu in September 2023 with a group of 11 people. And in February and March 2024, I returned to this vacation home with another group.
All of these times, I was with a balikbayan (i.e., a Philippine-born who is now living abroad) who wanted to have a relaxing vacation by the beach and spend quality time with their families and friends.
Aside from creating beautiful memories with them, I was also looking forward to watching La Union’s gorgeous sunsets, and working and writing for my blog while staying near the beach.
And Sunset Hour Elyu did not disappoint.
1. We had the entire home to ourselves.
Staying at a hotel may mean that you’d have to book several rooms to accommodate your group. And while they have amenities you can enjoy together, you will also have to share them with other hotel guests. Plus, you can only enjoy the amenities outside your rooms for a specific time.
But if you’re staying at Sunset Hour Elyu, you can have a relaxing vacation with your entire group and have the whole home just for yourselves – there is no need to share it with people you don’t know!
Just like we did on my previous visits, you can:
✅ Cook meals at their kitchen
✅ Have morning coffee at the small nook beside their first-floor room
✅ Have fun together and play board and card games with your family and friends
✅ Have a bottle or two at their dining table while singing to your favorite music
✅ Or, have long chats at their newly-built pergola
All without having to mind the other guests had you stayed in a hotel!

2. I had a restful sleep on their premium mattresses.
Sunset Hour Elyu has two bedrooms: one on the first floor and another on the second floor. Each room has two queen-sized beds (can sleep 8), and the second floor also has a twin pull-out bed (can sleep 1).
PRO TIP:
Traveling with 10-12 pax? Sunset Hour Elyu can add up to three more single mattresses on the second floor. Just message them ahead of time so they can make arrangements.
I’ve experienced sleeping in their queen-sized beds as well as in their twin pull-out bed.
And as someone with a back problem, I particularly loved sleeping on their 8-inch-thick Uratex Premium Mattresses. They gave me a great night’s sleep, helping me recuperate from the 5-hour drive to La Union from Manila.
PRO TIP:
Not a morning person? For the night owls, the blackout curtains will also help you sleep well, even in the middle of the day.
3. Both their rooms are fully air-conditioned.
We visited La Union when the temperature was 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit), and it was hot, even for us!
If you are not used to the heat and humidity of the Philippines, Sunset Hour Elyu’s fully air-conditioned rooms would be a welcome respite.
4. Enjoy a relaxing bath in their minimalist bathrooms.
Are you particular about bathrooms? Me too! Even when backpacking, I always check the T&Bs of accommodation options before deciding where to stay.
At Sunset Hour Elyu, you can enjoy a refreshing shower in their modern and spacious bathrooms.
After a full day of activities and sweating from the heat and humidity of La Union, I honestly felt like I was taking a shower in a luxurious hotel!

5. I love watching sunsets from their second-floor deck.
Sunsets in La Union are always to die for, and my last few visits were no exception.
Here’s one that I took from Sunset Hour Elyu’s second-floor deck during my last visit to La Union.
And this wasn’t a one-off occurrence. It was just one of my daily experiences watching the gorgeous sunsets in Elyu.

6. The beach is just a few steps away.
I love the beach and the serenity it so graciously offers. It’s like the world stops momentarily, and the waves cradle you into relaxation.

On my first stay at Sunset Hour Elyu, we bathed in the cool waters of San Juan, La Union, while watching the sunset. No words can describe how beautiful that experience was. It definitely is a memory I will keep for a long time.

7. You can cook meals for your group at Sunset Hour Elyu’s kitchen.
As someone who loves cooking, Melissa ensured her guests could cook meals while staying in her humble vacation home.
You can use their cookware to prepare your favorite meals for your family or friends. Or, you can also grill fish and meat that you can purchase from the nearby market!
There’s also a two-door refrigerator to keep drinks cool and store leftover food to prevent spoilage.
You can also use their water dispenser to prepare your hot/warm coffee in the morning, refresh yourselves with cold water to battle the heat, or, if you prefer, have your water at room temperature.
8. We enjoyed our meals and spent quality time at their dining table.
Complete with plates, spoons, forks, and knives, you can enjoy meals with your family at Sunset Hour Elyu’s dining area.
On my last visit, we also spent hours here enjoying a bottle or two (or many) while singing to our favorite tunes.
9. It’s just a short walk to Waves Point, the famous Kabsat, and the hip Flotsam and Jetsam
While you can easily spend your entire time in La Union, at Sunset Hour Elyu, I get that you may want to visit other spots in San Juan.
Sunset Hour Elyu is just a very short walk to Waves Point (where you can see the Mebuyan Vessel up close), Kabsat, and Flotsam and Jetsam.
PRO TIP:
If you’re already tipsy from drinking at Kabsat, and Flotsam and Jetsam, you can hire a tricycle to return to Sunset Hour Elyu.
10. It’s a mere 7-minute drive to the famous restaurants in San Juan, La Union.
While, for the most part, my companions cooked meals for us at the fully-equipped kitchen of Sunset Hour Elyu, I also had the chance to explore the food scene of San Juan, La Union, a bit.
Masa Bakehouse
I enjoyed having breakfast at the famous Masa Bakehouse (5 minutes away).
Kermit La Union
Ate Sha-Sha and I had mid-day cocktails at Kermit La Union (a 4-minute drive from Sunset Hour Elyu).
We also enjoyed their caprese salad with focaccia, and their beef salpicao. Their focaccia was so good that we ordered an extra serving!
Kahel Resort’s Restaurant
And loved our sumptuous dinner at Kahel Resort’s Restaurant (7 minutes away). I recommend their Poke Stack!
11. I loved watching the sky change colors in the morning.
I love starting my day early because of the quiet. I’ve watched the sky change colors a hundred times from the balcony of my home.
But working remotely while enjoying morning coffee with the view of the ocean on one side and the mountains on the other — I’d say that Sunset Hour Elyu’s mornings are one of the best.
12. They have a strong internet connection.
For digital nomads or if you simply want to update your IG and FB, this information is for you: Sunset Hour Elyu has a strong internet connection!
I’ve stayed at accommodations advertising that they have internet. But, a lot of times, it’s not as fast and stable as I needed the connection to be.
If you plan to do some work while vacationing, I can confirm that Sunset Hour Elyu’s internet connection was fast and stable when I stayed there. It allowed me to work on my blog, watch videos, and even design in Canva. One of my companions was even able to attend to tickets during her shift!

13. They have available parking space.
I don’t drive, so this wasn’t a massive issue for me. However, having taken numerous road trips with families and friends who do, I understand the importance of having sufficient parking space.
If you’re bringing a car to Sunset Hour Elyu, don’t worry. There are available parking spaces in front of their vacation rental.
PRO TIP:
It can get pretty hot in San Juan, La Union. So, I recommend that you bring a sun shade for your car.
14. They have topnotch customer service.
As a traveler, customer service is critical to me. I want my accommodation to be clean when I arrive. I must easily be able to reach the contact person of the place I’m staying at, especially if I have questions, immediate concerns, or requests.
Another thing I love about Sunset Hour Elyu is their top-notch customer service.
Melissa personally responds to inquiries and concerns of her guests (potential or current), whether she’s in San Juan or otherwise. When traveling, her reliable caretaker, Eloisa, ensures the vacation rental is clean and ready to welcome guests.
While guests are trusted with the home for the duration of their booked stay, Melissa is just a message or call away.

🚗 The best way to get to Sunset Hour Elyu is by car. If you’re coming from Manila, you can take NLEX, TPLEX, and then McArthur Highway. You can use this link from Google Maps, as guide.
